The real causes of burnout: you get what you tolerate

Burnout is no fluke. It slowly creeps into your life through a combination of stressors that you tolerate over and over again, until you can no longer ignore it. Here are the main causes of burnout. And how they burn you out if you keep allowing them to happen.

1. Unrealistic workload: stop being a "superhero"

If you structurally take on more work than is feasible, you accept a continuous state of exhaustion. Working through long days and evenings may temporarily feel good, but it is a quick recipe for burnout. By constantly sacrificing yourself for deadlines, you end up getting exactly what you tolerate: total fatigue.

2. No control? You don't accept that, do you?

Having little control over your working day sucks you dry. When you constantly have to meet other people's expectations without your own input, you are not the director of your work. The result? Frustration and loss of energy. Get a grip by setting boundaries and say no to tasks that do not contribute to your personal goals.

3. No appreciation? Are you seriously going to keep picking on that?

When you work hard without recognition, you accept a situation where you become jaded. A simple compliment or recognition for your efforts may be the deciding factor. But if it fails time and again, you start asking yourself, "Why am I even doing this?" Appreciate yourself and take the initiative to discuss appreciation, rather than waiting for recognition from others.

4. Work-life balance? If you let it go, you're always 'on'

When your work takes over your whole life, you run out of fuel before you realise it. Those blurring boundaries make you always available, even outside working hours. Consciously take time to check out, because a work-life imbalance is guaranteed to make you crash.

5. Perfectionism: an illusion that costs you your health

Perfectionism is the fuel of burnout. Striving for perfection (and not being able to let go) keeps you in a constant state of pressure. The longer you keep striving for the impossible standard, the faster you get stuck. Realise: good is often good enough.

6. Unclear expectations? Recipe for stress and hassle

How many times have you tried to fill in what your boss or team expects of you? If you don't know exactly what is required of you, you create a constant state of uncertainty. Communicate clearly and ask for clarity. Leave no room for confusion and frustration.

7. Toxic work environment? Reject that energy leak

Political games, gossiping and lack of support; a toxic work environment saps you. No one can flourish in an atmosphere of mutual rivalry or negativity. Find like-minded people, create your own positive environment and protect yourself from the negative influence of others. Is the situation not getting better? Then take a new step.

8. Emotional balance at home? Or do you keep going until you break?

Work stress is hard enough, but personal stress on top of it makes it almost untenable. Personal setbacks can quickly break down your resilience. Don't keep going until you burst, make sure you find support and recovery at home too.

9. Meaningless work? Dare to ask: "What's the point?"

Working without meaning feels empty and makes you prone to burnout. If you cannot see what your work contributes, you settle for feeling empty. Actively seek the value in what you do or create a new role for yourself that you do fulfil.

10. Underwork: boring work? It's a silent killer

Too little work or challenging tasks is just as harmful as an overflowing schedule. If you lack growth and challenge, you go through your days aimlessly and run out of energy. Take initiative to explore new projects that challenge you so you don't drown in boredom.

Conclusion: time to raise your standards

Do you recognise one or more of these factors in your work? Do not continue on autopilot and do not tolerate circumstances that drain your energy. Burnout is the result of too much compromise and too few boundaries.
