What is Wim Hof breathing?

Wim Hof breathing is a technique that allows you to breathe more consciously and control your breathing. It combines deep breaths with periods of breath-holding. This process helps you balance your body and mind. By using this technique, you can, for example, strengthen your immune system, increase your energy levels and cope better with stress.

How do you do the Wim Hof breathing?

Here's how it works in four simple steps:

  1. Comfortable posture
Find a quiet place and sit or lie down relaxed. Allow your body to relax completely.
  2. Breathe deeply
Take 30 deep breaths in and out. With each breath, let your belly and chest expand.
  3. Holding your breath
After the last exhalation, you hold your breath for as long as possible. This is also known as the retention phase.
  4. Recovery breathing
Inhale deeply, hold this breath for 15 seconds and then exhale calmly. Repeat this process three times.

When and how often?

  • Frequency: Once a day is a good start. If you want more focus or relaxation, you can use the technique more often, but always listen to your body.
  • Timing: Many people like to start in the morning for an energetic start, or in the evening to end the day with relaxation.

Note: never practice the technique while driving or in water.
