Four phases of personal leadership: a roadmap for growth and impact

 Leadership starts with yourself. Whether you are helping a colleague, learning to understand your emotions or inspiring others, leadership is a skill you can develop at every stage of life. In this blog, we discuss the four stages of personal leadership, a powerful model that helps you empower not only yourself, but also those around you. Discover how to make conscious choices, grow sustainably and create more impact, both at work and in your personal life.

 

Four phases of (personal) leadership:

Phase 1

  • You help a colleague when they get stuck in the moment (e.g. when giving a presentation).
  • You take initiative when you want to change something.
  • You are aware that your emotions determine the quality of your life, and you recognise avoidant behaviour and emotions you experience on a daily basis.
  • You can easily figure out where a bad mood comes from.
  • You understand that private and work are one, despite having different roles. Leadership in your family and health is at least as important as at work.
  • At the end of each day, you reflect on what you learned that day.
  • When someone criticises you, you listen carefully and usually ask for more details.
  • You are aware of the importance of health. You eat consciously (e.g. organic), may be vegetarian, and exercise more than twice a week.

 

Phase 2

  • You help a colleague with situations that also have an impact in other contexts (such as a presentation at the client's office or a speech to his family), making an impact even when you are not there.
  • You work proactively and from your circle of influence.
  • You realise that your emotional state is the most important thing in your life.
  • You are able to shift emotions such as frustration, powerlessness, fear or discomfort in an instant to feelings you do want to experience.
  • Even if you are very upset, find a way to put your feelings into words and express them.
  • With friends, you prefer to talk about how you think and experience life, rather than just what you have experienced.
  • You are aware of both the strengths and weaknesses of your personality.
  • When you look back at the past, you can clearly see when and how you have changed.
  • Health is one of your most important values. You exercise three times a week (cardio) and do strength training at least twice a week. You eat healthy and use blood tests, for example, to monitor your progress.

 

Phase 3

  • You help a colleague in a way that gives him security so that he takes it into his work and other areas of life in which he experiences anxiety.
  • You can make lasting changes in yourself that positively affect your whole life.
  • You are aware of how your emotions drive your thoughts and behaviour.
  • In relationships with others, you are aware of the underlying reasons for those relationships.
  • You recognise projection and understand that there is often a parallel process at play in the relationships you have.
  • That's why you regularly ask yourself the question: What does it say about me that I get this reaction from the other person?
  • You learn quickly from situations and don't need to experience things more often to learn from them.
  • You have developed routines and a system for your health, making it a priority at all times.

 

Phase 4

  • You influence a colleague in such a way that he first learns himself, and then teaches other colleagues how to present effectively.
  • You can make changes so powerful that you are an example to others.
  • You realise that real fulfilment in life comes not from what you get, but from what you give. You therefore ask yourself the question: How can I serve? Your focus is on contributions.
  • You effortlessly say no without guilt, and yes to life, no matter what it brings you.
  • You live, no matter what, in a wonderful state of mind.
  • You apply world-class health principles and focus on staying healthy and fit for longer.

 

Personal leadership is a journey, not a final destination. By consciously working through these four stages, you can not only develop yourself, but also inspire others and make a lasting impact in your environment. It starts with small, conscious steps that lead to big changes in your life.
