It is midnight.
Your head is on.
Your mind is ping-ponging in all directions.
You grab your phone.
No therapist.
No friend.
But a chatbot.
And fair is fair:
it feels like someone is listening.
AI responds calmly.
Judge not.
Asks questions.
Summarise.
For many people, that is already relief.
But is that the same as coaching? Or therapy?
No.
And at the same time: it's not nothing either.
What AI can do
AI can:
- Organising thoughts
- Returning patterns
- Asking reflection questions
- Helping articulate emotions
- be available 24/7
In a world with mental health waiting times and overcrowded schedules, this is valuable.
AI can provide temporary support.
And sometimes temporary is exactly what is needed.
Let's be honest about that.
Why this is attractive
The threshold is low.
No shame.
No judgment.
Not making an appointment.
For many people, AI feels like:
- A second brain
- A thinking buddy
- An emotional mirror
And at first, that is reassuring.
But therein also lies the risk.
Where it gets exciting
AI often confirms.
And affirmation feels safe.
But growth does not come from affirmation.
Growth arises from tension.
A true coach or therapist:
- Sees your body language
- Feels when you dodge
- Confronts your incongruity
- Bears silence
- Stays where it becomes uncomfortable
AI feels no tension in space.
It responds to language.
And leadership is not a language issue.
It is an identity problem.
Will coaching be replaced then?
Superficial coaching? Yes.
Coaching that consists mainly of:
- Ask questions
- Summary
- Giving insight
That one gets caught up.
And maybe that's healthy.
Every market matures because of technological pressures.
AI is forcing coaches to become deeper, sharper and more congruent.
This is not a threat.
That's evolution.
The real question for leaders
Many leaders are already using AI as a sparring partner.
For:
- Strategic reflection
- Preparing for difficult conversations
- Working out scenarios
- Structuring feedback
That's smart.
But AI does not confront you when you shoot into old behaviour under pressure.
AI does not sense when you get defensive.
Or when you make status more important than truth.
A good coach does.
What does this mean for you?
AI can help you think.
But it can't help you mature.
Mature leadership demands:
- Self-confrontation
- Anticipation
- Congruence under pressure
- Taking ownership where it chafes
AI is an accelerator.
But what accelerates it in you?
Conclusion
AI can help people organise their thoughts, explore emotions and find temporary support.
This is valuable.
But it does not replace real presence.
No voltage.
No relational mirror.
So the question is not:
"Is AI good or bad?"
The question is:
"Are you using AI as a tool...
or as a substitute for real confrontation?"
AI accelerates what is already in you.
The question is not whether to use AI.
The question is whether your leadership is mature enough for acceleration.
We look at patterns, tension and congruence.
No motivational talk. Real reflection, though.
